How to Cite Different Pages in Text With APA Style

Social sciences that are part of the academic discipline, such as Communication and Psychology, use a type of writing style for research papers called APA, which stands for the American Psychological Association. This style requires the researcher to cite information in specific ways both within the text of the research paper and on a References page at the end of the work. If you're quoting a piece of work or citing an article from a journal, you will need to cite the page number(s) in a specific format in both areas.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the document where you need to insert citations. Find the the first place that needs the citation. This should be an exact quote. Otherwise, you do not need to cite the specific pages of the information.

    • 2

Put the cursor between the last quotation mark and the period. In parentheses, write the last name or names of the researchers separated by an ampersand sign. If there are more than two researchers, separate all researchers by a comma; put an ampersand between the last two researchers in the list.

    • 3

Insert the year of the publication after the researchers' name. Separate the date and the researchers by a comma. Insert another comma after the date. Write "p." and write the page number or numbers where the information can be found. Cover multiple pages by writing the first and last page of the information with a dash between them. For example, "23-35." Write select, non-consecutive pages by separating with a comma. For example, "23, 25, 36."

    • 4

Cite the page numbers of a reference on the "References" page only if it is a journal periodical that resets the pages with each issue. Many periodicals will continue with the page numbers through consecutive issues. For example, if issue two ended on page "255" then issue three will start on page "256." Don't cite these pages numbers. If each issue starts on page one, however, cite the page number at the end of the appropriate reference by listing the first and last page of the article, with a dash between them.
