Community Colleges in Providence, Rhode Island

One of the largest cities in New England, Providence is the capital city of Rhode Island. Providence features over 39 miles of coastline and is known for blending historic sites with modern culture. The Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) is the only community college within Providence, and it boasts the distinction of being the largest community college in New England. With a host of certificate and two-year degree programs, obtaining a higher education at CCRI is affordable and convenient.
  1. Campus Locations

    • The Community College of Rhode Island has a total of six campuses spread throughout the state; two of these campuses are in Providence. The Liston Campus is located at One Hilton St., and it is the main Providence campus. This location is spread out over seven acres, which includes 20 classrooms, a 250 seat auditorium, expansive workshop areas and a central atrium.

      The Downcity Campus is located at 80 Washington St. in Providence and is housed in the historic Shepard Building. This campus offers students access to classrooms and smaller workshop areas. The building is conveniently located two blocks from a bus stop directly behind City Hall.

    Academic Departments

    • The Community College of Rhode Island houses over 20 academic departments, which range from business administration to performing arts. Each of these departments features Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree programs. Each umbrella academic department has sub-departments to expand the learning opportunities of students. For example, the Performing Arts department features Associate of Fine Art programs in jazz studies, theater, music or technical theater, each of which features its own department.

    Admissions

    • CCRI features an open admission policy for Rhode Island residents. The minimum admission age is 16 years old; however, those who are under 18 must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma. Those who are 18 years old or older may not be required to have a high school diploma or its equivalent. However, in order to apply for financial aid, veterans' benefits, athletic programs, or students who wish to enroll in certain medical degree/certificate programs, must have a high school diploma or equivalent.

      Interested students may apply for admission by visiting the Office of Admissions and Records at the Liston Campus. Applicants must pay the $20 application fee as well as forward high school transcripts and other required documentation to the admissions office.

      The Community College of Rhode Island begins processing admission applications for the upcoming semesters on September 1st of the current year. As certain degree programs feature registration cutoff dates, contact the admissions department to learn of current registration deadlines.

    Tuition

    • The Community College of Rhode Island bases its tuition amount on the number of credit hours taken as well as the resident status of students. As of 2011, the general tuition fee for in-state students is $153 per credit hour. Out-of-state students are charged $454 per credit hour. While students who do not reside in Rhode Island are typically charged the out-of-state tuition amount, CCRI residential policy states certain students may be charged the inter-state tuition amount, which is $230 per credit hour. Contact the admissions department to determine if you qualify for inter-state tuition prices if you do not live in Rhode Island.
