Choose a topic that contains enough research for you to write about in 3-5 pages. Even though you're writing an editorial, you will need to support your opinion with facts. Choose a topic with enough research that it allows you to do this.
Research how the topic you are writing about relates to current events. An editorial should be about a topic that relates to your audience, which means it needs to be both current and relevant.
Explain the topic in 1-3 pages. If your audience is going to understand your editorial they must first understand the topic and any other relevant editorials about the topic. Essentially, you're describing to your audience both the basics of the topic and what other people have written about it.
Present your opinion about the topic over the course of 2-4 pages. This section should either interpret the topic from your point of view, criticize the topic, try to persuade the audience to view the topic in a certain way or praise the actions people have taken in relation to the topic. For example, you might interpret, criticize, persuade your audience to an opinion or praise the United States president's recent actions on a certain issue.
Offer any solutions, if necessary, or sum up your argument in a paragraph or two. You might also offer a way for other people to respond to your editorial if you want to continue the conversation, such as on a blog or in a newspaper setting.
