How to Cite the Harper Collins NRSV Bible

First published in 1989, the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible aimed to update the language of the Bible and to make the translation more accurate. If you are engaged in academic study of the Bible or writing a paper that has extensive use of scriptural references, proper citation lends credibility and professionalism to your work. Cite the New Revised Standard Version as you would any other translation, but make sure to note that you are using the NRSV in your first citation. The exact format of your citation will vary depending on whether you are adhering to American Psychological Association (APA), Modern Language Association (MLA) or Chicago Manual of Style guidelines.

Instructions

    • 1

Format your first citation in the following order if you are adhering to the APA style guide: (book, chapter, verse, version). Enclose the entire reference in parentheses and use a colon to separate chapter and verse. For example: (Ezekiel 4:11 New Revised Standard Version).

Omit the translation in subsequent citations unless you are referencing a different version. Subsequent citations would appear as follows: (Ezekiel 4:11).

Follow this order if the citation is part of a sentence: book, chapter, verse (translation). For example: In Ezekiel 4:11 (New Revised Standard Version), the Lord gives the prophet Ezekiel a specific instruction.

    • 2

Format your first citation in the following order if you are following the MLA style guide: (version, book, chapter, verse). For example: (New Revised Standard Version Ezek. 4.11). Set the version in italics and abbreviate the name of the book. Separate chapter and verse with a period.

Omit the version in subsequent citations unless you are referencing a different translation. Subsequent citations would appear as follows: (Ezek. 4.11).

Include the range of verses if citing more than one passage. For example: (Ezek. 4.11-13).
