How to Cite the KJV Bible in a School Paper in MLA Format

The Modern Language Association (MLA) provides guidelines on how to cite major classical works, such as the Bible, within a paper. However, the format for citing the Bible slightly differs from that of other reference materials. This format should be closely followed when citing the King James Version of the Bible or any other version.

Instructions

  1. MLA Format for In-Text Citation

    • 1
Italicize or underline the name of the version.

The in-text citation for the Bible consists of the name of the Bible translation, book name, chapter number and verse number, all placed within parentheses. For example, (King James Version, Luke 2.4). Place a comma after the version and a period between the chapter and verse numbers. The version name should be underlined or italicized.

    • 2
Only include the version in the first in-text citation.

Also, abbreviations for book names within the Bible can be used in the in-text citation. Be aware of the appropriate abbreviation for each book. After the first Bible reference, do not include the version in the in-text citation again, unless a different version is used. List only the book, chapter number and verse number within parentheses.

    • 3
Include publication information to reference the Bible version.

To reference the King James Version Bible within the paper's works-cited section, include the version name, editor and the publication information. This includes the place of publication, the publisher and the year published.
