How to Cite Two Books of the Bible in APA Format

APA (American Psychological Association) style format has specific rules on how to cite references from the Bible. According to APA style, however, you do not need to cite books of the Bible on a reference list. You should check with your professors to see if they want you to cite books of the Bible (based on personal preference). If so, you should simply cite the Bible you used, not the individual books, so that you can include publication information.

Instructions

    • 1

Do not cite either book in APA format on a reference list.

    • 2

Cite the book of the Bible as an in-text citation by including the book (and verses if applicable) in the text of the paper. In parentheses, include the version of the Bible you are using. For example: The book of Luke (New International Version) is one of the four gospels.

    • 3

Cite the Bible itself as a book with the version of the Bible, an editor if applicable, the publishing location, the publisher and the date of publication. For example: Holy Bible, New Living Translation: (3rd ed.). (2004). Wheaton, IL; Tyndale.
