How to Cite Two Different Books by the Same Author in MLA Format

Two books written by the same author are cited slightly differently than most references in MLA format. MLA (Modern Language Association) asks you to include the title, author and page number in a parenthetical in-text citation. Reference list citations change slightly. Both books need to be cited, but you do not have to include author information for each book. The titles are included in the in-text citations so that the reader knows which book you are referencing in each instance.

Instructions

    • 1

Cite the two books in in-text citations with the last name, the title and the referenced page number in parentheses. For example: (Smith, "Book Title" 43).

    • 2

Cite the author's name in the text of the paper as an alternative and put the title and page in parentheses. For example: Smith discusses citation rules ("Book Title" 87-90).

    • 3

Cite the books alphabetically in the bibliography by title. For the first entry, include the author's name, title, publication information and medium. For the second entry, do not include the author's name, instead starting with three hyphens and a period. For example: Smith, James. D. Book Title. Chicago: Publishing House, 2008. Print. ---. Books and Titles. New York: Book Publishers, 1983. Print.
