How to Cite Numerous Books With the Same Author

When writing a research paper, you can benefit from citing multiple works by the same author. Authors of research books or journal articles specialize in fields and can write several pieces on related topics. When writing your own research paper, sources are listed alphabetically. Within the reference list, the American Psychological Association (APA) orders multiple books by one author in one way, and the Modern Language Association (MLA) uses its own set of rules. Each book is cited according to the standard MLA or APA rules.

Instructions

    • 1

Cite each book with the publication date and the author's name parenthetically for APA in-text citations. For example: (Mosby, 2009). MLA references are cited parenthetically as well but with the page numbers instead of the publication date. For example: (Erickson, 23-89).

    • 2

List multiple works by the same author in APA style in order of the publication date. The book itself should be cited with the author, publication details and book title. For example:

Erickson, M. (2001). Book on Brunch. New York: Food Publishers.

Erickson, M. (2003). Luncheon Ideas. Chicago: Recipe Publishers.

    • 3

Cite in MLA style by listing each book alphabetically according to the title of the book. MLA style cites books as author, title, publication details and publication medium. Articles -- "a," "an" and "the" -- are not used to alphabetize the titles. The author is listed for the first title only; all additional entries start with three hyphens, indicating the author is the same as above. For example:

Aldrin, Lily. Fashion Tips. Chicago: Vogue Publishers, 1988. Print.

---. A Life of Fashion. New York: Fashion Publishers, 2009. Print.
