How to Cite the Same Author Twice in APA

When you quote or paraphrase from the work of another author in your paper, American Psychological Association (APA) style requires that you cite basic bibliographic information within the text. If you need to quote two works by the same author, make sure to provide enough information so your reader knows which source from which you are quoting. Because APA style requires that you include the year of publication to distinguish between sources, citing two works by the same author does not normally require special formatting. However, if you need to cite two works by the same author published in the same year, you must format your citations in a specific manner.

Instructions

    • 1

Cite your first source with a lowercase "a" after the year of publication. For example:

      (Smith, 2009a, p. 45)

    • 2

Cite your second source with a lowercase "b" after the year of publication. For example:

      (Smith, 2009b, p. 45)

If you needed to cite other sources within the same year, you would use "c," "d," and so on.

    • 3

Format your reference list entries so they correspond with your in-text citations. The source that you cited as (Smith, 2009a, p. 45) should begin in your reference list as follows:

      Smith, A. (2009a).

The next citation should begin with:

      Smith, A. (2009b).

This ensures that your reader has no trouble understanding which citation refers to which source.
