How to Cite a Graph in APA

The American Psychological Association (APA) publishes a manual on APA style, a set of guidelines for how students and professionals should format and cite references in academic papers. The guidelines are primarily used in the humanities, where formal academic papers are more common. APA style has rules according to what sort of publication is being cited, including materials as small as brochures and graphs.

Instructions

    • 1

Check whether the graph has an author listed other than the author of the main body. Note the author and title of the graph because you'll need them in the citation.

    • 2

Create a citation using the example of a graph titled "Rates of Foreclosure" authored by C.E. Willis, which appears in the 2004 book "Economics for Beginners" by T.R. Statler, which was published in Arlington, Virginia by the publishing house Parker. Compare your citation to this correct answer: "Willis, C.E. (2004). Rates of Foreclosure [Graph]. In T.R. Statler, Economics for Beginners. Arlington, VA: Parker."

    • 3

Use the same primary author (T.R. Statler) and publishing information from step two but make Statler the author of the graph to practice writing a citation where the author is the same for the main work and the graph. Format this citation according to the usual format for citing a book: "Statler, T.R. (2004). Economics for Beginners. Arlington, VA: Parker."
