How to Cite a Web PDF in APA

A Web PDF is considered an electronic source for APA (American Psychological Association) citing purposes. Specifically, an online PDF file is a part of a data set and has slightly different citation rules than a simple website source. The important differences in citing a Web PDF is that you need to include the phrase "data file" to let the reader know that you are referencing a file from a data set and the phrase "retrieved from" followed by the link to the PDF so the source can be found again.

Instructions

    • 1

Cite the Web PDF in the text of the paper with the name of the PDF and the author of the file. By citing directly (not with a parenthetical citation) you introduce the reader to the resource within the essay itself.

    • 2

Create an in-text citation by putting the author and the year the Web PDF was published in parentheses after referencing the source. Data sets often have an organization as an author instead of a person. For example: (Austin Film Festival, 2010).

    • 3

Cite the Web PDF in the reference list with the author of the file, the publication date, the title of the PDF, the phrases "data file" and "retrieved from" and the website address where the web PDF came from. For example:

Austin Film Festival. (2010). Teleplay Application Instructions [Data file]. Retrieved from http://www.austinfilmfestival.org/datasets/2009application.pdf.
