How to Cite a Documentary in APA

Documentaries can provide social or historical context to your research that may not be available anywhere else. However, you cannot cite documentaries in the same way as a book or periodical, since they are produced and distributed differently. The sixth edition of the "Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association" gives guidelines for formatting a documentary reference so your readers can easily locate your source.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin the citation with the names of the producer and director. Give the last name followed by first and middle initials, and indicate the role of each person in parentheses. For example, "Smith, J. P. (Producer), & Jones, W. (Director)."

    • 2

Use parentheses around the year the documentary was released. For example, "(2009)."

    • 3

Give the title of the documentary in italics and specify the medium in square brackets. Capitalize the first word, any proper nouns and the word after any colons. For example, "Documentary of a big city [DVD]." Other possible mediums include "[Motion picture]" or "[VCR]."

    • 4

State the country the documentary comes from and the studio that released it. For example, "United States: Hollywood Documentaries."

If the documentary is hosted on the Web, replace the studio information with the access information. For example, "Available from http://video.google.com"
