How to Cite an Audio CD in APA Format

Preparing a research paper using APA style formatting guidelines helps the reader focus on the content of the paper, not the format of the references. The guidelines allow readers to identify the sources of the information you cite with minimal effort. In addition to covering the rules for citing books and articles, the APA style guidelines cover almost all media, including CDs, DVDs and TV shows or series. The APA style rules and guidelines are available in The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association.

Instructions

    • 1

Type the first line of the citation on the margin. Indent all additional lines one-half inch. This paragraph formatting is known as a hanging indentation.

    • 2

Type the songwriters name last name first, comma, first initial and period. Then type the copyright year enclosed in parentheses followed by a period.

      Example: Temperton, R. (1982).

    • 3

Type the title of the song with the first word capitalized only. If the recorded by artist is different from the writer, place the recorded artist’s name in square brackets ([]). Place a period at the end of this section.

Example: The lady in my life [Michael Jackson].

    • 4

Type the word “On” followed by the album title. Capitalize the first word only of the album title. Type the medium of recording in square brackets ([CD]) followed by a period.

      Example: On Thriller [CD].

    • 5

Type the location of the recording, followed by a colon, then the CD label followed by a period.

Example: Los Angeles, CA: Epic Records.

Example of a complete CD citation in APA Format (do not forget to use a hanging indentation paragraph format):
