How to Cite a Videotape in APA Format

Citing a videotape in APA format is an important skill to learn if you use a film as a source for a scholarly work or essay. The American Psychological Association designed the APA format to provide a standardized way to cite sources used in research-based documents. Designed mostly for use in the social sciences, the APA format gives instructions on how to properly format a research paper, endnotes and footnotes, in-text citations and electronic sources.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the following information from the videotape that you wish to cite in your bibliography: film title, series title (if any), director, other individuals responsible for work (if any), key actors, format, distributor and distribution date.

    • 2

Organize the information so that it is in the following order and format: "Title". Director. Key Actors. Year Made. Format. Distributor. Distribution Date. For example, if you were citing the film "Frankenstein" for your work, the citation would appear as follows: "Frankenstein." Dir. James Whale. Perfs. Boris Karloff, Colin Clive, Mae Clark. 1931. DVD. Universal Pictures, 2006. The year 1931 represents the original date the film was released and 2006 represents when the film was converted to DVD (the format used for this example).

    • 3

Check your work to ensure the information is in the correct order and that all of the names and titles are spelled correctly. Failure to cite the right sources can lead to accusations of plagiarism and can also severely diminish the quality of your research findings. Place periods between each section of your citation (i.e., between title and director, between director and key actors, etc.)
