How to Cite a Bible Verse in MLA

Whether you attend a Bible college, take a university course to study the Bible as literature or quote the Bible in a paper on a different topic, you must cite it as you do any other reference. Different versions of the Bible contain different wordings of the same passages, so the seventh edition of the Modern Language Association's "Handbook for Writers of Research Papers" requires you to cite a specific edition of the Bible.

Instructions

    • 1

Give the name of the Bible edition you are citing in italics. Capitalize all words except articles and conjunctions under four letters long. For example, "New King James Version, Smallest Bible Edition."

    • 2

Use "Ed." followed by the editor or editors names if any editors are listed for your edition. For example, "Ed. John Smith and Teresa White."

    • 3

Give the publisher's location and name and the year your edition was published. For example, "Nashville: Nelson, 1984."

    • 4

State the medium of publication as "Print."
