How to Cite YouTube in MLA Format

Citing YouTube as a source can seem difficult but it's actually very easy once you understand what type of source YouTube is and how to cite it. Most commonly used for humanities papers, Modern Language Association (MLA) style has specific rules for how to cite electronic sources. YouTube videos usually have an author or editor, as well as the title of the video and publication information. Once you have the correct information, citing YouTube is easy.

Gather the necessary information. To cite a YouTube video, you need the author or editor of the video, the title of the video, the website (in italics), the medium and both the creation date and access date. The creation date is not always available so leave it out if you can't find it.

Cite the video in the bibliography with the link first, followed by the remaining information. For example: http://www.youtube.com/user/albertsonsthelibrary#p/u/0/b-2f15aL48w Albertsonsthelibrary. "Research is Boring...Not!" Youtube. 1 June 2011. Web. 25 June 2011.

Cite the YouTube video in the text of the paper by putting the author of the video in parentheses. For example: (Albertsonsthelibrary).
