How to Cite a YouTube Commercial in MLA Format

While writing a research paper for a business, marketing or film class, the professor may ask you to compare commercials from different decades for the same company or commercials for the same type of product like toilet paper or soft-drinks made within a limited time span. One of the most prolific sources of video clips online is YouTube. You can find new and vintage commercials for any product or business your would like to research. After all of the research is done, the MLA Handbook outlines how to reference an online video both in the "Works Cited" and in text.

Instructions

  1. Works Cited

    • 1

Gather the necessary information required for the citation, including title of the video, director or creator (if listed), date created or uploaded, and date accessed.

    • 2

Start the citation with the complete title of the video as it is listed on YouTube with a period after the title and enclosed in quotation marks. For example, "Soda Commercial Crazy Monkey."

    • 3

Type the name of the director or creator next with a period after the name, if the information is available. Continuing the example above, the citation now looks like: "Soda Commercial Crazy Monkey." George Smith.

    • 4

Add the name of the website, in this case YouTube, in italics and place a period after the name. The citation now looks like: "Soda Commercial Crazy Monkey." George Smith. YouTube.

    • 5

Locate the year the video was created. If this information is not available you can use the date the video was uploaded to the website. Place a period after the year. For example, "Soda Commercial Crazy Monkey." George Smith. YouTube. 2009.

    • 6

Type the word Web and place a period after it.

    • 7

Finalize the citation by including the complete date that you accessed the video. The completed citation should read: "Soda Commercial Crazy Monkey." George Smith. YouTube. 2009. Web. 12, July 2010.

    In-Text Citation

    • 8

Locate the information to be cited. If the information in the entire paragraph comes from the YouTube commercial, you only have to cite the final sentence. If the information is a single sentence within the paragraph, you will cite at the end of that particular sentence.

    • 9

Place a space after the final word in the sentence before the period and type an open parentheses.

    • 10

Type the last name of the director or creator, if available.

    • 11

Type the first two or three words of the title of the video enclosed in parenthesis if no director or creator's name is available.

    • 12

Add closed parentheses to end the citation. The in-text citation should look like either: (Smith) or ("Soda Commercial").
