How to Cite a Scholarly Journal in MLA Format

In order to avoid plagiarism, you must take great care to include proper citations throughout your paper in order to give credit to those whose ideas you used or referenced. Remember that even if you paraphrase or reword the ideas of someone else, you must still give credit to the original author by providing correct citations. Modern Language Association style calls for scholarly journals to be cited both throughout your paper with in-text citations and at the end of your paper with a Works Cited page.

Instructions

Locate the author's name, the title of the article, the title of the scholarly journal, the volume and issue numbers, the year of publication, the page numbers and the website URL where you found the information. Remember that an article in a scholarly journal can have more than one author. If you did not find the journal online, you will not need to provide a website address.

Insert parenthetical citations throughout the text of your paper whenever you quote, paraphrase or use ideas from the scholarly journal. The in-text citation will only include the author's name and the page number where you found the information in parentheses. The Purdue Online Writing Lab uses this example: "Romantic poetry is characterized by the 'spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings' (Wordsworth 263)."

Use the information you gathered about your source to write the Works Cited entry for the scholarly journal. Try to fill in as much of the information as possible. Remember, if a piece of information is not available, you can omit it. The Purdue Online Writing Lab gives this basic format, which you can fill in with your scholarly journal's information: Author(s). "Title of Article." Title of Journal Volume.Issue (Year): pages. Medium of publication.

Format your Works Cited page correctly by double spacing the document. You will also need to indent any lines after the first line in your citation. The first line of your citation will fall directly on the left margin.
