How to Cite CDs in MLA Format

Whether you are in high school, college, or doing research in your chosen field, it is always important to properly document your sources when you're writing a paper. While books and other periodicals are still the most cited media, there may be a chance that you will have to account for material on a compact disc. MLA style format offers a simple method for citing CDs.

Instructions

    • 1

Create your Works Cited page. This belongs at the end of every paper and contains all citations, whether they're from books, films, albums or other sources.

    • 2

List the CD or CDs you have referenced in your work. For example, say you need to cite "The Fame" by Lady Gaga. The basic format of the citation looks like this:

Lady Gaga. The Fame. Interscope, 2008. CD.

The artist's name is always first, just like an author's when citing a book. When the artist goes by a first and last name, the last name always goes first (for example, had Lady Gaga kept her given name when performing, this citation would have started with Germanotta, Stefani). Italicize the name of the CD. Finish with the name of the manufacturer and its year of release.

    • 3

Place song titles in quotation marks. Place the song title after the artist but before the album.

Lady Gaga. "Poker Face". The Fame. Interscope, 2008. CD.

    • 4

List performers and composers when the information is available. In many cases, this information isn't crucial, but some instructors may require it. Use the labels "Perf." and "Comp." before listing those involved.

Lady Gaga. "Just Dance". The Fame. Perf. Lady Gaga, Colby O'Donis. Comp. Lady Gaga, RedOne, Akon. Interscope, 2008. CD.

Cite nonmusic CD-ROMs in a similar fashion. For example, say you wanted to cite the listing for the word "anecdote" in an electronic version of the Oxford English Dictionary:

"Anecdote." The Oxford English Dictionary. 2nd ed., version 4.0. CD-ROM. Oxford: Oxford UP, 2009.
