How to Cite a Blog in APA Format

The American Psychological Association (APA) format is a citation style that uses an author-date system and is geared towards social sciences papers. Social sciences, such as sociology, psychology, anthropology, education and communication may often use a blog entry (or several) as a point of reference in a research essay. The blog posting gives a personal perspective to the research and are useful resources. APA style has rules for how to cite a blog and a video blog.

Instructions

    • 1

Use parentheses for an in-text citation of a blog. Include the author's last name and the date the blog was posted. For example: (Smith, 2009).

    • 2

Cite a video blog with the title of the blog, the phrase "video file," the words "retrieved from" and the website address for the video blog. YouTube videos are often considered video blogs in APA format. For example: Communications Class Blog [Video file]. Retrieved from http://www.youtube.com/watchko?ihr.

    • 3

Cite the blog as author, publication date, title, medium (in this case "web blog"), and the blog's URL. You should try to find the author's name but you can use a screen name if it's unavailable. For example: K Hamilton. (2009, June 18). Felt Crafting Tips [Web blog]. Retrieved from http://www.blogspot.com/craftingtips.
