Start with in-text citations. APA uses an author-date method while MLA uses author-page number. In-text citations go in parentheses. For example: (Smith, 1998) or (Jones, 23-25).
Cite APA books, in order, as author, publication date, title, publishing location and publisher. For example: Smith, A. (2003). Citing Books in APA. Seattle: Book Publishers. If possible, include the names of the editors after the book title and note the edition. List as many as seven authors, but no more. If the number exceeds seven. include an ellipse between the sixth and seventh names listed.
Cite APA articles in a manner similar to book articles. Include the author (or authors), year of publication, article title, journal, magazine or newspaper title, issue numbers and page numbers. For example: Kapowski, K. (2007). Citing articles. Journal of Citation, 23(7), 18-40. Always note the month and day that a newspaper or magazine article was originally published.
Cite APA on-line sources, such as web pages or web documents, as author, date, title and URL. For example: Morris, Z., & Spano, J. (1998, July 24). Web citations. Retrieved from http://www.webcitations.net. An online journal should be cited as a regular journal article with the addition of "retrieved from" and the URL.
Cite MLA web sources as editor name (or author), website name, website sponsor name (if any), publication date and access date. For example: NBC. Saved by the Bell. NBC Television Network, 18 May 1992. Web. 9 July 2011. MLA citations don't use the URL but some professors still ask that it be included. Web pages are listed the same way as a website and online articles follow the instructions for print articles.
Put MLA article citations with the author, titles, dates and page numbers for both newspaper and magazine articles. For example: Spano, Jesse. "Article Citing. Citation Magazine 2 August 2008: 78-81. Print. Journal articles should also include the volume number, journal title and issue number.
Order information for MLA book citations as author (last name, first name), book title and publication data. For example: Morris, Zach. MLA Citations. Austin: MLA Publishers, 1968. Print. List all authors or list the first author and "et al" to indicate multiple authors. Editors should be noted after the book title.
