How to Cite Magazines in MLA Style

The Modern Language Association provides a standard formatting style used in academic papers. The MLA style is most often found papers written in the area of liberal arts, as opposed to the APA style used for social sciences. The MLA style considers magazines as a type of periodical, and they should be cited in a similar way as newspapers, reviews and journals. The MLA styles also determines how you should cite the magazine within your paper.

Instructions

    • 1

Cite articles from a magazine used as sources for your paper as follows: "Author. "Article Title." Magazine Title Date Month Year: page range. Medium.

Italicize the title of the magazine. Replace "medium" with "Print" or "Electronic" depending on where the magazine is published. (See Reference 2)

    • 2

Format the citation by indenting the second line of the citation by five spaces. Do not put a period after the name of the magazine.

    • 3

List the last name of the author(s) of the magazine article followed by the page number(s) for in-text citations. For example, "(Smith, 100-102)." If the article does not have any authors, use the first word of the title instead.
