How to Cite an MLA Handbook in MLA Style

MLA, or Modern Language Association, style is a method of formatting reference citations traditionally used for liberal arts or humanities papers and articles. You should cite a resource in a works cited page as well as in the text. An MLA Handbook citation is listed the same way that other books are listed because it is a nonfiction book. Citing a reference is easy once you have gathered the necessary information about the resource.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather the information you need for the citation: the author's name, title of the book, publisher and date and place of publication. Also include the publication medium, which in the case of a book is "print." For example: MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 7th Edition by the Modern Language Association, published in 2009 by the MLA in New York.

    • 2

Cite the book on a works cited page as author, title (in italics), the edition, where the book was published, publisher, publication date and publication method. For example: Modern Language Association. MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers. 7th ed. New York: MLA, 2009. Print.

    • 3

Cite the book within the text in parentheses. Use the author and the page number. For example: (MLA 17).
