How to Cite Copyrighted Websites in APA Style

A copyrighted website is actually cited in the same manner as an ordinary website in APA style. With a copyrighted website, you should be able to find publication information somewhere on the website. The publication data helps to copyright the website and is important to include for an APA style citation. Finding copyrighted information can be difficult at times so search the website thoroughly. Sometimes the publication information is on a separate webpage but you should still cite the website as a whole.

Cite the website with the author and date on in-text citations. For example: (Draper, 1990). Sometimes the author is not available. In this case, use the first two to three words of the website's title and the date. For example: (Steak Seasonings, 2008).

Cite copyrighted websites on the bibliography page with the author (or authors) the publication date, the title of the website and the URL of the website. For example: Draper, D., & Sterling, R. (2009, October 23). Steak Seasonings. Retrieved from http://www.steakseasonings.com/types

Use the abbreviation "n.d." if there is no publication date available and "n.a." if no author is available. Remember that publication information can be hard to find on a website so look carefully before using these substitute abbreviations.
