How to Cite a Website in a Text Using APA Style

When writing your papers for class, you will likely need to add a citation for a website. Sometimes it can be tricky to locate all of the information necessary, but a complete APA citation for a website includes several parts. By following the APA citation format and occasionally hunting around on the website, you can be sure that you are providing accurate credit to your source.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the author's name. This is often below the title of the article or near the bottom of the page in the footer.

    • 2

Locate the date of the Web page. Sometimes you are only provided with a copyright year, but some websites provide complete dates for their articles. If there is no date, you can use "(n.d.)."

    • 3

Copy the title of the Web page. This is usually the title of the article, but if there is no specific article, you can use the title of the Web page as it appears in your Internet browser's title bar.

    • 4

Copy the complete Web address of the website.

    • 5

Compile these pieces of data into the following format:

Author, A. (Date). Website title. Retrieved from http://[webaddress].

      For example:

Smith, Joe. (5 June 2010). Example Website. Retrieved from http://www.example.com/example.html.
