How to Cite a Web Page in a Footnote

Web pages are individual pages of a website, so if you use several pages in your research you should cite each one. Footnotes are used in Chicago style citation. You should actually include a footnote and a bibliography citation in the paper. The footnote is the in-text citation for the web page, while the bibliographical information is entered on the final reference list.

Instructions

    • 1

Collect the prevalent information for the citation. You need the title of the web page and the title of the website it comes from. The website title should be put in italics. Publication dates and access dates, the web page's author and the address are all needed for the footnote.

    • 2

Cite the foot note as author, web page title, website title, date of publication, date you accessed the web page and the URL.

For example: Joan Crawford, "Footnote Citations," Citing Sources. Last modified April 9, 2004. Accessed July 16, 2011. http://www.citingsources.com/footnotecitations.

    • 3

Use just the access date, if a publication date is unavailable. If there is no author for the web page, start the citation with the title of the webpage. Note also that you can use the URL of the website instead of a title for the website, if you prefer.
