How to Cite a Web Page Using Footnotes

With the increase in Internet information and accessibility, citation guidelines for websites have become much more straightforward and clear. Nevertheless, as noted in Purdue University's online article about documenting sources, "various disciplines are still deciding what the correct way to document electronic sources is, and disciplines are constantly changing their minds as to what the most appropriate ways are." Be sure to clarify which style is required before handing in your next research paper. The following citation style is taken from the Chicago Manual of Style and is very common in academic settings.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert a footnote into your document immediately following the quote or sentence you wish to cite. This can be accomplished on most word processors simply by clicking "Insert" and then scrolling down to "Footnote" at the top of the document. The footnote will number itself automatically.

    • 2

Move the cursor to the footnote. If there is an author listed on the webpage, type his or her name (first name followed by last name), followed by a comma.

    • 3

Type the title of the webpage in italics or in quotations marks, followed by a comma.

    • 4

Type or copy and paste the web address and press the space bar.

    • 5

Type the date of the webpage in parentheses, followed by a period. Here is an example of a complete Website citation:

John Doe, "How to Make a Million Dollars in One Day," http://www.millionbucks.com (May 2009).
