How to Cite a Webpage in the Text Using MLA

MLA, or Modern Language Association, style is a method of documentation that standardizes the citation of references in research papers, articles and other scholarly documents. MLA style is most often used in the humanities, and college students will often be asked to use this style of documentation at some point during their education. MLA documentation style consists of a bibliography or "works cited" page at the end of the paper that corresponds with shorter in-text citations.

Instructions

    • 1

Create the full bibliographic citation on your "Bibliography" or "Works Cited Page." To properly cite a web page in your bibliography, use the following format: Author's last name, author's first name. Name of web page. Date the page was published or last updated. Location from which, and date that you accessed the web page. <web page URL>. Page number, or section you referenced. The name of the web page should be underlined.

    • 2

Write the sentence or paragraph in your paper using your web page source.

    • 3

Create a parenthetical citation in your text. After the text, but before the punctuation mark, note the author's last name and the page number you referenced. For example: (Johnson 3). If no page number is available, the author's last name alone will do: (Johnson). If no author name is given, use the name of the web page: (eHow).
