How to Cite the Name of a Documentary Within Text

A documentary can seem difficult to cite within the text or the paper. It is a film but at the same time has an author. As it turns out, in-text citation of a documentary is very easy. You need to make sure you have all of your information and know what formatting style you will be using. Because documentaries can cover a wide variety of topics and papers are written in many different fields, there are different citation formats. The three main citation styles are Modern Language Association (MLA), American Psychological Association (APA) and Chicago Style.

Instructions

Cite using MLA style by stating the author (usually the narrator but it can be the main creator) of the documentary and the name of the film in the text of the paper. For example: "Rejoice and Shout" is a gospel documentary by Don McGlynn.

Cite a documentary in APA format using the same rules as MLA style. Cite the documentary within the paper's text.

    • 3

Cite in-text with Chicago style by using footnotes. The footnote needs the title of the documentary (in italics), the format, the director, the place of production, the studio that produced it and the year it was released. For example: The Cove, DVD, directed by Louie Psihoyos (Australia: Lionsgate, 2009).
