How Do I Cite an Epigraph on Title Page in MLA?

An epigraph is a quotation that is placed in an academic paper on the title page, before the introduction begins. An epigraph can help to set the overall tone of the paper. The quotation can be from a poem, journal article, book or any other source that you think adds to your paper. The way in which you cite the epigraph depends on the type of source you are using. The epigraph only needs to be cited one time.

Instructions

    • 1

Type the quotation you are using on the title page of your paper. Place it below your name, the date and any other general information you are required to provide. The epigraph should be centered directly below the title of the paper.

    • 2

Type the name of the author of the quote underneath the quotation after a "---" sign.

    • 3

Create a works cited page at the end of your paper for all of the sources which you have used in your paper.

    • 4

Type the citation for the epigraph with all of your other citations in alphabetical order and in the appropriate format. For example, if the direct quote is from a book, the citation would look like this: "Smith, Jamie. The Appalachian Trail. New York, NY: Penguin Publishing, 1993. 1-365. Print."
