How to Convert MLA to APA Format

The Modern Language Association and American Psychological Association formats are two of the most popular academic writing styles. While they are similar in broad outline, there are quite a few differences between the two formats, mostly having to do with page layout and citation style. If you have written a paper in MLA format and need to change it to the APA format, the easiest way to go about it is to address one difference at a time across the entire paper, rather than trying to remember all the differences at once as you go through your paper.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a separate title page that includes your name, the title of your paper, and the date of publication. In APA format, only the first word of your title is capitalized.

    • 2

Insert an abstract at the beginning of your paper. An abstract is a short (one paragraph) summary of your paper that should include your thesis, a brief outline of your research methodology, and a succinct description of your results.

    • 3

Change your header. An APA header consists of the first few words of your title followed by the page number. In MLA, the header is your last name and the page number. In both cases, the header should be right justified.

    • 4

Change your in-text citations. APA uses the same type of parenthetical citation as MLA, but it consists of the cited author's last name and the publication date of the cited work, separated by a comma. By contrast, your MLA citations should have the author's last name and the page number with no comma.

    • 5

Change the title of your bibliography page from "Works Cited" to "References."

    • 6

Abbreviate the first names of the authors listed in your bibliography. All references should include the authors' last names and first initials.
