How to Cite a Theatrical Production in APA Style

University professors will often ask their students to use unfamiliar citation guidelines. Professors do this because they want their students to have the ability to write for any scholarly publication. Most students learn MLA formatting in their formative years, but students will need to learn other formats like American Psychological Association, or APA, style and Chicago style. APA style is often used within the social sciences, so be prepared to learn it for anthropology, economics and history classes.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the exact location of the quote you are using. Most plays are divided into acts, sections and lines. Use those three numbers to cite the play.

    • 2

Open the parentheses after you have finished your quote. For the in-quote citation, you will need to add the author and then a comma. Add the year of the edition's publication. Add another comma then the exact location of the quote. Close the parentheses and add a period.

    • 3

Write the playwright's last name first for the works cited page. Add a comma then the first initial of the first name. Add a period. Put the date of publication in parenthesis. Add a period. Italicize the play's title. Add a period. Write the place of publication. Add a colon. Write the publication company. Finish with a period.
