How to Cite Financial Documents in APA Format

The American Psychological Association format, or APA format, is used to quote material in research papers. APA style is geared towards the social sciences and is designed to increase the clarity of information as well as avoiding plagiarism. Although the APA format has guidelines to quote almost every kind of document and report that is pertinent to social sciences, the in-text citation and reference material follow relatively simple rules that are consistent for financial documents as well as many different kind of references.

Instructions

  1. In-text citations

    • 1

Open a parenthesis after your sentence. Start the citation by writing down the author or authors. If there are seven or more authors, write down the name of the first author and include the phrase "et al" afterwards. If no author is provided, skip step 1, and go to step 2.

    • 2

If an editor is given instead of an author, write the editor's name. If no author or editor is given, write down the title of the work cited and proceed to step 3.

    • 3

Write down the year when the work cited was published. Close parenthesis.

    Reference material

    • 4

Start the citation with the name of the author or authors. If an editor is provided, but no author, use the editor's name and the abbreviation "(ed)". If you have more than seven authors, you can use the name of the first author followed by "et al".

    • 5

Write down the year when the reference was published in parenthesis. For periodicals, such as financial news, or time-sensitive reports, include the month or year, if appropriate, following the "year, month, day" format.

    • 6

Write down the name of the the material cited. If you are citing from a specific article within a publication (professional journals, for example), start with the article name, and follow with the name of the publication.
