How to Cite in APA for a Hyphened Author's Name

The American Psychological Association created the rules of APA Style to produce straightforward writing that highlights ideas and not the manner of presentation. These rules and guidelines are included in The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. The rule for hyphenated words is to capitalize the first word and not the second. For hyphenated names, even when initialed, the rule is to hyphenate both the first and second name.

Instructions

    • 1

Type the publication year after the author’s name and in parenthesis. Use this method when quoting an author in an in-text citation in an APA Style paper. Type the page number (p. ###) at the end of the quotation. If the author’s name is not included elsewhere, place all the information at the end of the quote (Author’s Name, Year, Page).
      Examples:
Bryant-Michaels (2005) study showed that water is wet (p. 255).
      According to Bryant-Michaels (2005), “water is wet” (p. 255).
      Water has been proven wet (Bryant-Michaels, 2005, p. 255).

    • 2

Type the author’s last name, hyphenated, comma, first initial and period for an author in an APA Style reference list where the author’s last name is hyphenated.
      Example:
      Bryant-Michaels, R. (2005). Journal of Liquids. Water is Wet, 2, 255-260.

    • 3

Type the author’s last name, comma, first initial, period, hyphen, second initial and period for an author in an APA Style reference list where the author’s first name is hyphenated.
      Example:
Assume this author’s name is Michael-Rick Bryant.
Bryant, M.-R. (2005). Journal of Liquids, Water is Wet, 2, 255-260.
