How to Cite APA for Memos

Writers in business, science and social science fields use the American Psychological Association (APA) style of citing research. Memos, short notices to employees or the public in the form of letters, advertisements or emails, require minimal citation. In fact, APA does not even require writers to list an entry for memos in the final References List; APA only requires an in-text citation for memos.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin the citation by stating the author of the memo: John Smith.

    • 2

State that the reference is a "personal communication."

    • 3

Provide the date of the email: December 2, 2007.

    • 4

Separate each item of information with a comma and enclose the whole entry with parentheses:

(John Smith, personal communication, December 2, 2007)
