How to Do the Prewriting of a Paragraph

Prewriting, or brainstorming, is an integral part of the writing process. It fosters better organization, flow of ideas and clearer writing. Paragraphs should be focused on one central argument or set of sources. Each paragraph requires a topic sentence, a body and a transition or conclusion sentence. Prewriting can help you create solid, effective paragraphs.

Instructions

    • 1

Consider what topic you want to pursue in the body of the paragraph. You should focus your attention on one topic or argument, rather than on multiple ideas. For example, if you are writing a paper on water conversation, think about discussing one issue, such as neighborhood watering restrictions.

    • 2

Create a topic sentence for the paragraph. The topic sentence introduces the reader to the new topic you will discuss, and gives a general opener to the topic. For example: "Many cities have attempted to ameliorate drought climates in Arizona by enforcing city-wide watering schedules." This topic sentence represents the coming paragraph and is a key component of the whole paragraph. Rewrite the topic sentence a few times to find strong, clear wording.

    • 3

Brainstorm the sources and examples you want to use. Pick two or three sources to discuss in the main body of the paragraph. Use reputable secondary sources to bolster your argument. You can also use direct quotes from primary individuals on the topic, if available. Think about how you will tie these central sources into your overall argument. How do they fit in with the topic sentence of the paragraph?

    • 4

Practice writing transition sentences, which will conclude your paragraph. The end of the paragraph often signals the beginning of a new paragraph, so a clear transition is essential. Use a source or example near the end of the paragraph that ties into the next topic you want to discuss. For example, if there is a study that suggests that city-wide water use ordinances are ineffective, place that at the end of the paragraph to set up an anti-regulation discussion in the next paragraph.
