How to Build a Paragraph

In the American English language, one of the most important composition lessons taught in grade school is how to properly build a paragraph. A paragraph consists of several sentences that are put together to form an idea. In most formal English language classes in the United States, a paragraph is taught to be written in three different parts: the topic sentence, body sentences and concluding sentences. Additionally, a strong paragraph should have a very clear-cut topic with the ideas in the paragraph being specific to that idea.

Instructions

    • 1

Brainstorm a topic and come up with a topic sentence. A topic sentence is the first sentence of the paragraph and should introduce your idea very specifically. Write down this sentence on the piece of paper.

    • 2

Compose the supporting sentences. Supporting sentences explain or support the idea of the topic sentence. Every paragraph should have at least three to five sentences in each paragraph. Write these following the topic sentence.

    • 3

Write a concluding sentence. A concluding sentence comes at the end of the paragraph after the topic sentences. This sentence briefly summarizes the information from the introduction and topic sentences.

    • 4

Look over the paragraph. Add extra details to the paragraph to give a better picture of the topic. Include enough information and detail to give a clear idea about what the paragraph is about.

    • 5

Edit the article with spell check. Check for grammatical errors. Read the article aloud to check the flow.
