How to Cite a Poster in APA

APA, or the American Psychological Association, citation format is used in the sciences, according to Purdue University. This format utilizes a parenthetical in-text citation format to acknowledge information and sources in a written report. This style of citation also includes a full reference page at the end of the report. Poster presentations, where a speaker provides information while utilizing visuals, should be cited using both the in-text and reference citations.

Instructions

Create a bibliographic entry for the poster presentation. This entry will be placed in the "References" page at the end of the written work. Obtain any information about who completed the poster presentation, the date and the title of the presentation, as well as the title of the event at which the poster presentation was given. Put this information into a bibliographic entry. Begin with the last name of the creator followed by his first initial. Include the year and month the poster presentation was given, and the title of the presentation, underlined. Conclude with the name of the event and the location. For example:

Smith, J. (1996, February). Posters of the World. Poster presentation at the national poster conference, Chicago, IL.

Remember to underline the name of the poster presentation as well indenting any lines of the citation after the first line.

Create an in-text citation for the poster presentation. The in-text citation should be placed at the end of the sentence in which the poster information was utilized and before the period at the end of the sentence. Write the last name of the presenter in parenthesis. Since the poster presentation will have no page numbers, you can simply use the creator's last name.

    • 3

Create an in-text citation using a shortened version of the presentation's title. If you are citing a presentation without a known creator, use a shortened version of the poster presentation title in the parentheses. For example, if the presentation was entitled "Posters of the World" you could use the shortened name "Poster". Place this title in parentheses at the end of the sentence and before the period.
