How to Cite a PowerPoint Presentation in APA

The American Psychological Association maintains a specific format for page structure, citations, footnotes and references. This format is often used when citing sources in research papers at institutions of higher learning. The APA publishes an official manual which clearly states the guidelines for citing various forms of references. Microsoft PowerPoint presentations, for example, must include the author's last name and first initial, date, presentation title, the mention of the reference as PowerPoint slides and the source of retrieval.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the last name of the PowerPoint author and their first initial, separating them with a comma.

    • 2

Write the date of the presentation in parentheses, placing a period at the end outside of the parenthesis. If there is no date of production for the presentation, write "(n.d.)." without the quotes.

    • 3

Write the title of the PowerPoint presentation in italics.

    • 4

Write "[PowerPoint slides]" without the quotes immediately after the title and place a period at the end after the bracket.

    • 5

Write "Retrieved from" without the quotes and write the name of the website followed by a colon and the website address without a period at the end.

A complete example of a citation would appear as:

"Meyer, M. (2007). Plant Beauty in Convenient Packages: Container Gardening [PowerPoint slides]. Retrieved from: http://www.mg.umn.edu/powerpoint/containergardening.ppt" (without the quotes)

The title, "Plant Beauty in Convenient Packages: Container Gardening," must be italicized.
