How to Cite a Translated Work in APA

The translator's task is twofold: first, to translate the physical words of a text; second, to convey the author's style and expressive sense in the use of those words. In the translation of a technical or scientific text, the first responsibility clearly outweighs the second, whereas the opposite is true in the translation of a literary work. Whether you're a scholar of the arts or the sciences, there may be times when you want to use and reference a translated work according to the style of the American Psychological Association (APA). The APA offers guidelines that make this easy to do.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the last name and first-name initial of the author of the translated work you want to cite separated by a comma and followed by a period. For example, write "Proust, M."

    • 2

Write the date of publication of the work within parentheses and followed by a period. For example, write "Proust, M. (1925)."

    • 3

Write the English title of the translated work you want to cite. Capitalize only the first word of the title and any proper nouns like names (Berlin, Nixon, Coca-Cola). For example, write "Proust, M. (1925). The Guermantes way."

    • 4

Write the first initial and last name of the translator followed by a comma and the abbreviation "Trans." which stands for "Translator," in parentheses and followed by a period. For example, write "Proust, M. (1925). The Guermantes way. (C. K. Scott Montcrieff, Trans.)."

    • 5

Write the volume number of the work you are citing preceded by the abbreviation "Vol." within parentheses and followed by a period if your source is part of a multivolume work. The abbreviation "Vol." stands for "Volume." For example, write "Proust, M. (1925). The Guermantes way. (C. K. Scott Montcrieff, Trans.). (Vol. 3)."

    • 6

Write the city and state of publication of the translated work separated by a comma and followed by a colon. For example, write "Proust, M. (1925). The Guermantes way. (C. K. Scott Montcrieff, Trans.). (Vol. 3). New York, NY."

    • 7

Write the publisher's name followed by a period. For example, write "Proust, M. (1925). The Guermantes way. (C. K. Scott Montcrieff, Trans.). (Vol. 3). New York, NY: Random House."

    • 8

For an in-text citation according to APA style, write the last name of the author of the translated work and the date of publication separated by a comma and enclosed in parentheses. An example: "The Saint-Loup persona (Proust, 1925) is critical to this thesis."
