How to Cite Work on the Internet

The Internet has become an invaluable resource for students and educators alike, providing quick and convenient access to a wide range of research materials. However, this means that new referencing conventions have emerged to correctly cite work which has been accessed online, enabling individuals to easily verify any sources which have been used. Fortunately, referencing a Web page using the Modern Language Association style is straightforward.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the last name of the author, if available. Place a comma and then write the author's first name. For example: "Farthing, Kirsty." Place a period.

    • 2

Write the title of the website. For example: "Italian Chocolate Recipes." Place a period.

    • 3

Write the date the website's content was created or updated, if available. Place a period between the month and year information. For example: 12 Jan. 2009.

    • 4

Write the parent organization that owns or hosts the material, if relevant. For example: "International Cakes Limited." Place a period.

    • 5

Write the date you accessed the website. For example: "16 Feb. 2011." Follow the conventions of the previous date, placing a period between the month and year.

    • 6

Write the URL of the website. This should be between a "more than" and "less than" symbol. For example: <www.Internationalcakes.com>. Place a period. Therefore, a full reference would resemble the following: Farthing, Kirsty. Italian Chocolate Recipes. 12 Jan. 2009. International Cakes Limited. 16 Feb. 2011. <www.Internationalcakes.com>.
