How to Cite Newspaper Articles in the ASA Style

The American Sociological Association Style, or ASA, is a type of citation format used in scholarly writings. This style is used by authors preparing works for publication in ASA journals and students whose instructors require ASA citation. Like other citation styles, proper adherence requires observance of strict rules. ASA guidelines provide instruction on the proper citation form for a variety of sources including newspaper articles. When citing a newspaper article in ASA format, it is important to familiarize yourself with all requirements including punctuation, capitalization and information you must include from the source.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin the citation with the author's name. Write the author's last name, followed by a comma and his or her first name. Place a period after the author's first name.

    • 2

Write the year of the publication. Place a period after the year. Write an open quotation mark. Write the complete title of the article inside the quotation mark. Place a period after the last word in the title. Place a closed quotation mark after the period.

    • 3

Write the name of the newspaper in italic or underline the name if italics are not available. Place a comma after the newspaper's name. Write the month and day of the publication. Place a comma after the day.

    • 4

Write the page number the article is located on in the publication. Include only the page number if the entire newspaper was paginated consecutively. If the newspaper was paginated in sections, include the section letter and page number, for example B5. If the article began and ended on separate pages, list each page separated by a comma. Place a period behind the final page number.

If you accessed the article from a Full-Text Database, place an open parenthesis after the period following the page number. Write the words "Retrieved from," the full name of the database, followed by the word "on" and the month and day you accessed the article. Place a comma after the day and write the year you accessed the article. Insert a closed parenthesis followed by a period.

Alternatively, if the article was accessed via an online source include the date you accessed the article and the URL in lieu of the page information. Write the word "Retrieved" followed by the month and day you accessed the article. Insert a comma and write the year you accessed the article. Place an open parenthesis after the year and write the entire URL inside. Place a closed parenthesis after the URL and place a period at the end.
