How to Cite an Online Newspaper Article in MLA Format

MLA provides citation guidelines for a variety of resources, including online periodicals. If you are using MLA style and wish to cite an online periodical, it is important to adhere to the appropriate formatting rules.

      Write the author's last name, followed by a comma and first name. Place a period after the entire name.

      Write the title of the article in quotation marks. Place a period after the title inside of the quotation marks. Write the title of the newspaper in italics or place an underline beneath the title if you are printing the citation. Place a period after the title.

      Write the date the article was published. This includes the day, followed by the month and year. Do not place a comma in the date and abbreviate longer months such as November and December. Place a period at the end of the complete date.
