How to Cite a Video Cassette in ASA Style

Creating a works cited page for a paper or book can be tricky, as different types of sources (books, journals, websites) require a specific format when referenced. ASA (American Sociological Association) style citations are typically used for essays related to the social sciences. While ASA guidelines do not specifically state how to format a reference to a video cassette, they do have guidelines for film or video references that you should adhere to when writing your bibliography.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the last name of the author or director of the media, a comma, and his first name. (Wallace, Mark.) For two authors, write the last name that is first alphabetically, a comma, the author's first name and the second author's first and last name. (Brown, Tyler and Mark Wallace.)

    • 2

Write the year the video was released, followed by a period. Write the title of the video cassette in italics, including the subtitle (if applicable), followed by a period. Write the format, which in this case is "Video Cassette," followed by a period.

    • 3

Write the place the video was filmed or published, followed by a colon. Write the name of the publisher, followed by a period. For example: "Los Angeles: MGM Video."
