How to Cite Sources in Biology

Publications in biology and other scientific fields normally follow the documentation style of the Council of Science Editors (CSE), formerly known as the Council of Biology Editors. This CSE Style Manual provides different methods of citing sources, both in-text and in a bibliography at the end of a document. Academic papers, scholarly journal articles and other papers in biology must conform to the CSE style guidelines.

Choose a system for internal (in-text) citation. The CSE Style Manual provides three systems of internal citation: citation-name; citation-sequence; and name-year.

    • 2

Cite sources by citation-name. Use a superscript number for each in-text citation, directing readers to the entry in the reference list. Arrange the reference list numerically in the order in which the citation appears in the document.

    • 3

Cite sources by citation-sequence. Use one of two methods: 1) an alphabetical listing of all references in the reference list by author surname and then title; and 2) an assignment of a number for each reference. Cite resources internally by inserting the corresponding reference in superscript form.

    • 4

Cite sources by name-year. Cite parenthetically the author's surname and the year of publication, separated by a space. Alternatively, cite only the year of publication parenthetically following the author's name in the sentence. For instance: "Martin (2007) supplements his early theory with further research."

    • 5

Cite sources in a bibliography or works cited using the following format: author's surname, author's first name. Year of publication. Title of publication. City of publication: Name of publisher. Arrange the items alphabetically in a bibliography, unless you use the citation-name system.
