How to Cite Sources in College Papers

College term or research papers are written on a broad range of topics. Sources of information that were used to contribute to the paper must be recognized in the document. How a resource is cited depends on the type of documentation style preferred by the instructor and the type of source used. Common types of documentation styles are the MLA, APA and Chicago styles. Common types of reference materials are books and periodicals.

      Create a list of the relevant details on the sources used including the author, publication or work title and the number of the series, volume, issue or edition being cited. Include the publication date, city and publisher as well as relevant page numbers.

      Assume we are citing the book "Wild Swans," written by Jung Chang. The book was published in 1991 by Simon & Schuster in New York, N.Y.

      Cite the book in MLA style in the works cited list using the following punctuation and sequence: Chang, Jung. Wild Swans (italicized). New York: Simon & Schuster, 1991. Print.

      Cite the book in APA style in the reference list using the following punctuation and sequence: Chang, Jung. (1991). Wild Swans (italicized). New York: Simon & Schuster.

      Cite the book in Chicago style in the bibliography using the following punctuation and sequence: Jung Chang, Wild Swans (italicized) (New York: Simon & Schuster, 1991).

    Magazine

      Assume we are citing the article "Wrestling Over Greenhouse-gas Policy," written by Bradford Plumer that appeared on pages 14 - 16 of the March-April 2010 issue of Audubon magazine, volume 112, number 2.
