How to Type References for College Papers

Failure to cite sources that you've quoted or consulted for a paper can result in a lower grade or a failing grade. To properly cite your sources, you should include internal citation, footnotes or endnotes, as well as an attached works cited page or bibliography. The specific style for citing references differs by academic discipline, so consult your professor about the appropriate format.

Instructions

    • 1

As you write your paper, keep a running list of every source you have used, including all of the information you will need to cite it later. This may include author, title, URL (if the source is a website), date published, publisher and any other information pertinent to the source.

    • 2

Title a blank page "Works Cited", "Bibliography" or "References". Use a standard font and 12-point type.

    • 3

Determine which format you need to cite your sources. For instances, most social sciences require American Psychological Association style, and liberal arts and humanities require Modern Language Association style. Council of Science Editors style is most often used in the sciences.

    • 4

Include every source that you mentioned or consulted for your paper under references. Rearrange the sources so they appear in alphabetical order, by the first letter.

    • 5

You will likely need to include footnotes, endnotes or internal citations throughout your paper. Every time you use a fact or observation that is not common knowledge, you must cite it to avoid plagiarizing.
