The University of Oregon's Historic Preservation Program is situated within the School of Architecture and Allied Arts. The program has an interdisciplinary backbone that includes architecture, art history, interior design, planning, anthropology, and history. On an undergraduate level, the program offers a minor in one of three concentration areas: preservation theory, design, and technology; resource identification and evaluation; and preservation planning and cultural resource management. Coursework can also include planned field studies abroad and within the United States.
The Savannah College of Art and Design's historic preservation program offers bachelor's and master's degrees and a minor in cultural landscape. The bachelor's coursework includes studies in practical and philosophical issues concerning preservation. Critical issues within the curriculum include sustainability, ethics, environment, heritage tourism, and values. SCAD's bachelor's program consists of 180 credit hours in all. It focuses on the communities that are affected by historic preservation and the economics of preservation.
The Historic Preservation and Community Planning program at The College of Charleston is within the college's art history department. This alliance allows the program to emphasize the interdisciplinary relationship between conservationists and art historians. Being situated in historic Charleston, South Carolina, the HPCP program benefits from a wealth of historical treasures and a history of civic preservation. The department also operates a historic preservation club that allows students to explore their interests in a hands-on manner during extracurricular hours.
University of Mary Washington was one of the first colleges in the U.S. to establish an undergraduate program in historic preservation. Located in Fredericksburg, Virginia, the program has grown to become the largest B.A.-granting historic preservation program in the nation. Concentrations within the program include historic architecture, folklore, archaeology, architectural conservation, planning, and museum studies. Students also have opportunities to deepen their studies through research, fieldwork, and public education programs offered by the University of Mary Washington Historic Preservation Studies Center.
