How to Cite Websites in Text in Papers

Citing sources is necessary not only to give credit to scholar's original work, but also to maintain academic integrity. There are many different styles and forms that decide how you cite, and they vary depending on what you wrote and how you utilized said citation. Cite your sources correctly to avoid plagiarism.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide on your citation style. This often will be provided for you by the person requesting the paper. Depending on your style of citation, the details of its composition will change.

    • 2

Gather your source's information. This will include website URL, author, publishing date, page title, and others depending on style.

    • 3

Write your citation. Follow the format of your style precisely in order to avoid plagiarism.

For MLA format, the style demands you put "[author's last name], [first name and middle name]." Then add the title of the web article, putting quotation marks around it. Give the main name of the site, the date the article was published, and the date you accessed it. Lastly, give the online URL location address. The final product should look like this:

Sherman, Chris. "Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About URL." SearchEngineWatch. Ed. Danny Sullivan.

      24 Aug. 2004. 4 Sept. 2004 <http://searchenginewatch.com/searchday/article.php/3398511>.

For APA format include the title of the website, the year it was published in parentheses, the title from the article, and the online URL preceded with the text "retrieved from." The final product should look as such:

Sea Turtle Restoration Project. (2006). Threats to sea turtles. Retrieved from http://seaturtles.org/section.php?id=104

For Chicago style, list the author's last name, with a comma, then first name. Following that, include the year it was published, the title of the article in quotations, the name of the website, the date accessed, and the online URL. The final product looks like this:

Hermans-Killam, Linda. 2010. "Infrared Astronomy." California Institute of Technology. Accessed Sept 21. http://coolcosmos.ipac.caltech.edu/cosmic_classroom/ir_tutorial/.
