How to Cite Sources in APA Style at the End of a Paragraph

The American Psychological Association or APA has a specific writing style for journals, similar to the Chicago and Turabian formats. The purpose of the APA style is to ensure all articles written in that style conform to the same format. This is especially important for citing sources, which is common in psychology studies. One way to cite sources in text with APA style is to use parenthetical documentation at the end of a sentence or paragraph.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify a passage that doesn't contain your original thought. Any time you directly or indirectly use another author's idea, you need to cite it.

    • 2

See whether the author's name is already used in the sentence. If you have already mentioned the author in the paragraph, you just have to put the page number or source it comes from in parentheses at the end of the paragraph.

    • 3

If the author's name was not already mentioned in the paragraph, put her name in parentheses with the page number. Example: (Smith, 65.)

    • 4

Write out the full citation in the "works cited" page. This page, also known as a bibliography, is at the end of the paper. It contains more detailed information on the source, including the full name of the work and publication information.
